Cobalt and Specialty Materials, one of its business units, is a world leader in active materials for secondary Ni-Cd, Ni-MH and Li-ion batteries, with production units in Belgium, South Korea and China. Production brand includes cobalt oxide and lithium metal oxides for Li-ion batteries, nickel hydroxide and cobalt additives for Ni-Cd and Ni-MH batteries.

Umicore is also the largest recycler of Precious Metals based products and recovers in total 20 Precious or Special Metals in its recycling processes.
